Take an overland transfer to Zhongdian, now known as Shangri-La, a scenic Tibetan town in the Himalayas perched at an altitude of 3,300m. You’ll spend the next two nights at Songtsam Retreat at Shangri-La - MGallery Collection, a boutique Tibetan-style retreat overlooking a sacred valley. Explore Shigu, a charming Naxi village that boasts two historic sites. Then admire First Bend in the Yangzi River, a beautiful natural landmark where the river makes an almost 180-degree turn from southeast to northeast, and the dramatic Tiger Leaping Gorge, one of Asia’s deepest natural formations.

Visit the 17th-century Songzhanling Monastery, built under direction of the fifth Dalai Lama, where you’ll meet a living Buddha – a monk who has become a Buddhist doctor. Then it’s on to the Old Town with its winding cobblestone alleyways and smoke-charred shrines, where you’ll learn how to print scriptures using traditional techniques and visit a Tibetan family who will teach you to make yark butter tea. Head to Ringha Village, where timber houses dot a flowering meadow, where you can hang ‘pray flags’ for good luck at the local monastery.
