DESTINATION GUIDE

Istanbul Atatürk Airport

As the largest airport in Turkey, it is no surprise that in 2016 Istanbul Atatürk Airport saw more than 34,000,000 passengers pass through it. Istanbul Atatürk Airport is the main international airport in Istanbul with the others being Istanbul Hezarfen Airfield and Sabiha Gökçen International Airport. The airport is used for both commercial passenger flights and cargo flights. The airport opened in 1924 and was originally named Yeşilköy Airport, and was later rename in 1980 to Istanbul Atatürk Airport in honour of the founder of the Turkish Republic - Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. The airport has three runways and two passenger terminals. One terminal is used solely for international flights, whilst the second is used for domestic flights. Both terminals are equipt with a number of passenger facilities ranging from resturants and bars to duty free shopping. Each terminal offers a dedicated VIP lounge offering complimentary refreshments, newspapers and Wi-Fi. To the west of the main passenger area there is a general aviation terminal alongside a dedicated cargo terminal. The airport is well connected to the city centre, with rail, bus and road connections. Metro services run from the airport to the city frequently, whilst shuttle services are more comfortable they run less frequently. The airport operates 24 hours a day and welcomes private aircraft – however it’s important to consider that this airport can become incredibly congested in peak seasons.
